Collect
Almighty God,
from whom all thoughts of truth and peace proceed:
kindle, we pray, in every heart,
the true love of peace,
and guide with your pure and peaceable wisdom
those who take counsel for the nations of the earth;
that in tranquillity your Kingdom may go forward
till the earth is filled with the knowledge of your love;
through Jesus Christ our Lord . . .
Amen.
New Testament Reading - Self-discipline
24In a race everyone runs, but only one person gets first prize. So run your race to win. 25To win the contest you must deny yourselves many things that would keep you from doing your best. An athlete goes to all this trouble just to win a blue ribbon or a silver cup,a but we do it for a heavenly reward that never disappears. 26So I run straight to the goal with purpose in every step. I fight to win. I’m not just shadow-boxing or playing around. 27Like an athlete I punish my body, treating it roughly, training it to do what it should, not what it wants to. Otherwise I fear that after enlisting others for the race, I myself might be declared unfit and ordered to stand aside.
. . . . . 1 Corinthians 9:24-27- Literally, “a wreath that quickly fades,” given to the winners of the original Olympic races of Paul’s time.

Prayer
Our Father,
save us from the time of trial,
and deliver us from evil.
God, we go into this night
confident that the dawn will break tomorrow;
grant that when we come to die,
we may go gladly and in hope,
confident in the resurrection.
Amen
The Blessing
May Christ the Son of God, gladden our hearts
with the good news of God’s Kingdom.
Amen
